The VAN breaks hard just in time.

In that moment Breffni is free.

He scrambles to his feet and in the nick of time manages to

yank open the back door of the VAN and dive inside.

CONTINUED:

Dessie makes a leap and manages to grab hold of Breffni's

foot.

BREFFNI:

(shouting)

Drive on, for f***'s sake!!!

The VAN suddenly pulls off, leaving Dessie nothing but

Breffni'S SHOE in his hand.

85 INT. VAN - NIGHT 85

Billy leans out his window and has a quick look around.

86 EXT. GRADY'S BAR - NIGHT 86

Dessie stands ROARING and SCREAMING.

He makes a run and flings Breffni's shoe into the air.

87 INT. VAN - NIGHT 87

Billy turns back around and keeps on driving as fast as he

can on the country road.

Eoghan CLAPS him on the back.

EOGHAN:

Brilliant stuff, man!!!

Breffni, holding his bloody nose, appears from the back to

put his arm around Billy's neck.

BREFFNI:

You're a f***in' star!!! The

f***in' Rockford files!!!

Billy, pumped up from the whole thing lets out a ROAR.

BILLY:

AAAAAHHHHHYEAH!!!! I am a star!!!

BREFFNI:

Billy is the man!!!

BILLY:

I f***in' am. Just ye wait til' ye

see me... Just wait til ye see!!!

Breffni and Eoghan don't really know what he is referring to

but continue to CLAP him on the back.

88 INT. FARRELL HOUSE/HALL - NIGHT 88

Billy comes in the front door followed by Breffni and Eoghan.

Breda and Eilish open the sitting room door.

BREDA:

Where were ye?

Before Billy has a chance to answer, Eilish breaks into a

LAUGH when she sees Breffni.

EILISH:

Well Breffni Grehan, long time no

see.

She notices his bloody nose.

EILISH (CONT'D)

What the f*** happened to ye?

Breda indicates the kids' rooms and gestures for them all to

come in to the sitting room.

89 INT. SITTING ROOM - NIGHT 89

A tired looking Billy sits drinking a GLASS OF BRANDY. He

watches the others as they listen to Breffni, who now holds a

CLEAN HANKY against his nose.

BREFFNI:

And only for Billy here I was

f***in' toast!

EILISH:

Fair play to ye Bill.

Billy raises his GLASS.

Breda beams at him.

BILLY:

I'm glad everything went well down

below.

Breda looks to Eilish.

EILISH:

Yeah but that b*tch Yvonne Egan...

Well she upset Breda and we decided

to go for a walk just to clear our

heads.

BREDA:

But instead we got out of our

heads!

BREFFNI:

Right on!

EILISH:

I'm goin' to shoot off.

Eilish indicates Breffni's SHOELESS STOCKING FOOT.

EILISH (CONT'D)

You can hop along up the town with

me if ye like, fill me in on all

your adventures.

Breffni starts to hop on the spot.

Eoghan puts down his GLASS, unsure on whether to leave with

them or not.

Breda spots his unease.

BREDA:

Sure there's no rush Eoghan, finish

your drink.

Eoghan smiles and picks his GLASS back up.

BREFFNI:

Respect Bill!

Billy raises his hand in acknowledgement.

EILISH:

Good luck Breda. See's ye's both on

Saturday night!

Breffni and Eilish leave the room.

Billy looks to Breda.

She turns to Eoghan.

BREDA:

So what has you in the town?

EOGHAN:

Well would ye believe I sell these

fold up golf putting greens... My

Uncle Gilbert invented them and I

was at a loose end and kinda broke

so when he suggested that I go

round the country selling them....

Billy stares into the middle distance and his eyes slowly

shut.

90 INT. SITTING ROOM - LATER 90

Billy wakes up in the chair to see Breda's hand on his arm.

BREDA:

Wake up Billy, ye don't want to be

sleepin' there all night.

Billy is fully awake now.

Breda takes her hand from his arm and steps back from him.

BILLY:

Breda.

BREDA:

Yeah.

BILLY:

Don't mind the likes of Yvonne

Egan.

Breda smiles and turns to go but hesitates.

BREDA:

Billy... I eh... You know the way

it's our anniversary on Saturday,

well I was thinkin' that we should

go out.

Billy turns to her and nods but his mind is racing.

BILLY:

(hesitant)

Yeah, it's just that... I...

BREDA:

Well listen what if I go out with

Eilish and maybe meet you in the

Copper later on. You and me haven't

had a drink out together in a long

while. That'd be all right wouldn't

it?

Billy turns back from her.

BILLY:

Yeah.

Breda looks pleased and leaves the room.

Billy takes a large gulp of his brandy. He stares ahead.

91 EXT. STREET/ SQUARE - DAY 91

Breda walks from the direction of 'KUTE KUTS' HAIRDRESSERS,

and passes by a SHOP WINDOW which is full of a LINE OF FEMALE

MANNEQUINS who wear smiles and nice dresses.

Breda CATCHES a reflection of herself and her NEW HAIRSTYLE

and very much likes what she sees. She smiles to herself and

walks on with a definite spring in her step.

92 EXT. GOLF CLUB - LATE AFTERNOON 92

Billy sits in an open manhole beside the clubhouse, working

on a SPAGHETTI JUNCTION OF WIRES around him.

He LOOKS UP to see Tony missing a putt on the eighteenth

green. Billy smiles to himself at Tony's frustration.

Billy glances over at the practice area where Eoghan is

demonstrating his FOLD-UP PUTTING GREEN to Ernie and TWO

O THER GOLFERS.

Tony, wheeling his GOLF TROLLEY, arrives over to Billy and

looks at the wires.

TONY:

Hard at it...

BILLY:

It's well for some.

Billy stands up out of the manhole.

BILLY (CONT'D)

Come here, Tony... I want to show

ye something.

93 EXT. VAN - DAY 93

Billy retrieves a PACKAGE and a brand new looking JACKET from

the back of his VAN.

93A EXT. VAN - MOMENTS LATER 93A

Tony waits, smoking a CIGAR.

Billy emerges from behind the VAN. He has changed into an

Italian style designer WHITE SHIRT with trendy coloured

stripes and the JACKET. Tony takes him in for a moment.

BILLY:

Well...

I'm just bein' honest with ye

now...

Eoghan, carrying one of his PUTTING GREENS, and with Ernie in

tow, arrives at his CAR and opens the boot.

BILLY:
