TONY:

- It's just not you...

Eoghan and Ernie look across at Billy.

EOGHAN:

I think it's... Yeah, you look

well.

Billy takes a moment to make sure that Eoghan is being

genuine and then brightens up.

EOGHAN (CONT'D)

I'm sure Breda's goin' to love it.

Ernie nods in agreement. Tony shakes his head.

BILLY:

(to Tony)

Ah what the f*** would you know?

95 INT. FARRELL HOUSE/SITTING ROOM - EVENING 95

Breda watches TELEVISION with James and Edel.

They all look up as they HEAR the BANG of the front door.

EDEL:

Mam, are ye a golden one?

BREDA:

That's fifty years.

EDEL:

Or is it a ruby wedding?

BREDA:

No... We're just a... We're ten

years... Whatever that is.

EDEL:

I'll think of a name for it.

96 INT. BEDROOM - EVENING 96

Billy hangs the SHIRT and JACKET up in the wardrobe amongst

his other clothes.

97 INT. SITTING ROOM - EVENING 97

Edel looks to Breda.

EDEL:

What's he doin'?

JAMES:

Probably havin' a shite.

BREDA:

James..!

Billy arrives in.

BILLY:

Howareye's?

He passes on into the kitchen, returning moments later with

his plated dinner. He sits down and digs into it.

Breda WATCHES him eat and then looking very disappointed,

glances back at the TELEVISION.

Edel can sense what's going on and looks to her father.

EDEL:

Daddy!

Billy looks up.

BILLY:

Wha?

He suddenly see's Breda's new hair.

BILLY (CONT'D)

Oh, right, Jeeez it's... Ye look

brilliant... Doesn't she, lads?

The children nod.

Breda smiles but is not entirely happy with the reaction.

BREDA:

Right James, time for your bath.

J ames doesn't move.

BILLY:

(to James)

You have trainin' in the morning.

James, with a face that would stop a clock, gets up from the

couch and then throws himself back onto it.

JAMES:

(in a tantrum)

I'm not goin'.... I f***in' hate

it... I won't go...

BILLY:

Course ye are... You're the best

little half forward in Offaly!

James is buried in the couch and won't move.

Breda looks to Billy.

Billy nods, picks James up and carries the protesting child

from the room.

98 INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT 98

Billy lifts James from the bath and as the water drips off

his body, wraps him up in a TOWEL and gives him a squeeze.

James can't help LAUGHING. Billy kneels in front of his son

and dries his hair.

BILLY:

Come here to me... What's... Sure

ye always loved the football.

After a moment, James meets Billy's eyes.

JAMES:

It's the bigger fellas?

BILLY:

What? Are ye gettin' hassle off

them?

JAMES:

They do tease me in the toilets...

That I'm real... small...

(in tears again)

I don't want to go.

Billy is clearly upset and takes a moment to gather himself.

BILLY:

Listen to me, I know what it's like

to be... they're only... Thick

cause you're so good... Don't mind

them. Ye have to stand up to them.

(almost to himself)

That's what ye have to do in this

town, stand up and be noticed.

Billy gives his son another little squeeze.

BILLY (CONT'D)

I have the day off tomorrow so I

can take ye, watch the game, and

bring ye straight home

afterwards... Okay?

James slowly nods his head.

Billy kisses his forehead.

99 INT. SITTING ROOM - NIGHT 99

Billy sits back down with Breda and Edel in front of the

TELEVISION.

BILLY:

He'll be grand, I'm goin' to take

him to the game.

Breda smiles and puts her hand on his knee. Billy puts his

hand down on hers and leaves it there.

Edel sees this and is pleased.

BREDA:

Are ye not goin' down the town?

BILLY:

No...

Breda turns to him and smiles.

BILLY (CONT'D)

... Savin' meself for tomorrow

night.

BREDA:

(with a hint of

flirtation)

I'm lookin' forward to it.

BILLY:

Yeah... It'll be... A late one.

They both LAUGH awkwardly. Edel laughs along with them.

BILLY (CONT'D)

Your hair is... Looks real well.

They three of them turn back to the TELEVISION.

100 INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY 100

Breda WATCHES from the window as...

Outside, Billy REVS UP the VAN. James, with his KIT BAG on

his back climbs into the passenger seat. The VAN pulls off.

Breda stays at the window until Edel pops her head into the

room.

EDEL:

Right Ma, I'm off to Geraldine's.

Edel sees that her Mother is distracted.

EDEL (CONT'D)

Hey Ma, I have a name for your

anniversary. I was thinkin' of

copper, after 'The Copper Beech'

cause that's where you and Da went

on your first date.

Breda smiles and gives Edel a big hug.

101 INT. EIRCOM VAN - DAY 101

Billy drives with James beside him.

They look to each other and Billy reaches across and ruffles

his son's hair.

S omething CATCHES Billy's eye on the side of the road.

A pissed off Imelda standing beside her YELLOW MINI.

As they drive on past, in the REARVIEW MIRROR, Billy sees

Imelda kicking one of the CAR'S TYRES.

102 EXT. SCHOOL/GAA FIELD - DAY 102

The practise match is well under way as James solos past his

marker and kicks the ball narrowly wide. Billy CLAPS LOUDLY

but as the game restarts he can't seem to concentrate.

Distracted, he walks away from the touch line as if to leave

but then stops and returns to pitch side. He shuts his eyes

for a moment.

He opens his eyes and sees that James is at the other end of

the pitch.

103 EXT. SCHOOL - MOMENTS LATER 103

Billy backs his VAN out of the school.

He checks himself in the REAR VIEW MIRROR. He is nervous and

on edge.

104 EXT. ROAD - DAY 104

The VAN pulls up beside Imelda at the side of the road. She

is trying to change the TYRE but struggles with the JACK.

Billy gets out of the VAN and approaches the CAR.

He nods and tries to give Imelda his best smile but she's in

no mood for pleasantries.

IMELDA:

... F***in' thing!

BILLY:

L et me do it.

IMELDA:

Would have called me Da only me
