The Beast:
We will finish this in front of the world.

[Mrs. Price rolls her son on his back. He's fatally injured and near death]

Mrs. Price:
Elijah.

[The Beast takes a few steps in the direction of the Osaka Tower, before Casey grabs his arm]

The Beast:
Release me.

[Casey embraces The Beast]

Casey:
Let me talk to Kevin Wendell Crumb.

The Beast:
No! Release me.

Casey:
I need to talk to Kevin Wendell Crumb.

The Beast:
(desperate) He needs me.

[But Casey is determined to bring her friend into the light]

Casey:
Kevin Wendell Crumb. Kevin Wendell Crumb. Kevin Wendell Crumb.

[The Beast calms down and gets cast out of the light. When Casey steps back, Kevin is in control again]

Kevin:
Hey. The Beast listened to me. He couldn't do what he wanted.

Casey:
You can tell him what to do.

Kevin:
I'm not in charge of the light.

Casey:
(hopeful) Yes. Yes, you are. It feels good. Doesn't it?

Kevin:
(nods) Mm-hmm.

Casey:
Will you stay in the light with me? For a little while?

[We're then shown the laser lights pointing at Kevin. A shot is fired, Kevin whimpers as blood starts to pour from the bullet wound in his chest. We see the sniper, lying on top of an police car. He has a tattoo of a black clover on his wrist. Someone talks to him via a police radio]

Officer (vo):
She was able to turn him. Target down.

[Dr. Staple is seen behind the car the sniper took position on. She has a somewhat regretful visage. A few steps away, Joseph tries to get to his father, but some SWAT officers keep him away]

Joseph:
(trying to push through) You guys got to help him. That's my dad. He's trying to help you guys. The guy in the green, that's my dad. He's trying to stop the Horde. He's really weak.

[The helpless David is grabbed by one of the officers and dragged to a nearby pothole, which has now been filled with water. As David's head gets shoved into it, we see that the assaulter also has a black cover tattoo. Dr. Staple approaches the struggle, lies down and sticks out her hand]

Dr. Staple:
David. David, take my hand. Take it now!

[David grabs the doctor's hand and he gets a vision of her sitting in a restaurant. When some people leave, a curtain gets pulled in front of the entrance. All of the remaining guests stop talking]

Cult Member:
It's just us.

[On Dr. Staple's wrist, we then see yet another black clover tattoo. David looks at her, horrified]

Dr. Staple:
They sent me here for you three. Tell me the truth. Did I almost convince you you were an ordinary man?

[She loosens her grip on David's hand]

Dr. Staple:
I would have left you alone, but when the Horde showed up here, then I just had to come.

[The doctor looks briefly at the restraining officer and then walks away. David's head gets lowered back into the water. Cut to Elijah's mother kneeling down next to her severely wounded son]

Mrs. Price:
Didn't you tell me there was a showdown at the end of a limited edition? How come you didn't know how it was gonna end?

Elijah:
(weakly) Oh, Mama. This is not... a limited edition. This... was an origin story... the whole time.

[David's head gets slammed into the puddle again and again, until David isn't moving anymore. Kevin, lying on his back, holds Casey's hand as his life starts slipping away. Casey tries to cut off the blood flow, but she cannot delay the inevitable]

Kevin:
(gasping for breath) What's happening?

[He switches to Hedwig]

Hedwig:
(crying) I like being nine. It... it hurts, Casey. Get it to stop hurting. (worried) I-I can't... hold on to the light, Casey.

[He switches to another personality, Heinrich, who has a heavy German accent]

Heinrich:
I should never have listened to her.

[Another switch]

Dennis:
Now these pants got blood on them. They're ruined. We got to clean these pants, Casey.

[Another personality surfaces, speaking in a calm, dictating manner]

Samuel:
As his body slowly succumbs to the inevitable, a sensation of cold water spreads through his body. His thoughts are a mixture of fear and sweet relief.

[Casey cries as Patricia takes the light]

Patricia:
Ladies and gentlemen, here's Patricia. We should all listen to her.

[Patricia gets pushed out by another female personality. I'm guessing this is Polly]

Polly:
Did you see them? They are both extraordinary. I never doubted. I... Never let them tell you I doubted it...

[Kevin then comes back into the light, for the last time]

Kevin:
They're all so scared. But I told them that I'm gonna hold the light now. You really my friend?

[Casey nods her head, smiling, but her face is streped with tears]

Kevin:
Then I'm gonna hold the light till the end. (laughs) Till the very end. (weakly) It's not so bad being in the light.

[After a few seconds, the light leaves Kevin's eyes and his head falls to the side, dead]

Casey:
(whispers) Kevin...

[She kisses Kevin's head and cries. Joseph kneels down next to his father's body as one of the officers tries to use CPR to revive him. It's no use, it's clear that David is gone. Joseph cries, gets up and pushes the officers away in anger, yelling muted insults. Dr. Staple enters Elijah's field of view, she talks to his mother as she briefly leads her away]

Dr. Staple:
(to Mrs. Price) Would you mind stepping away for a moment so I can check him? It's okay.

[The doctor kneels down, holding her hand on the dying man's chest]

Dr. Staple:
(to Elijah) They got it wrong in the comics. They talk about secret evil groups trying to stop the heroes. I don't think we are particularly evil, and we don't choose sides. We try to stop both of you. If there is one of you, the opposite of you appears. It escalates. We step in. There just can't be gods amongst us. It's not fair. It has worked just fine, for ten thousand years, our way. Take consolation in the fact that you were right about your theory. Be at peace.

[She gets back up and walks away. Mrs. Price sits back down, in time to hear her son's last words]

Elijah:
I... wasn't... a mistake, Mama.

Mrs. Price:
(firmly, almost proud) No. You were spectacular.

[Elijah smiles and dies shortly thereafter. We briefly see the three dead superhumans, with their significant other sitting next to them, on computer screens in the facility. The footage then gets deleted as Dr. Staple gives a statement to the several staff members of the facility]
