SCENE FOUR

ACT ONE

(Mrs Arinze stood up from her sits to the opposite one and opens Thelma bag to bring out the ringing phone and finds three bundles of cash inside the beg. With rage she carry the money and heads to Thelma’s room to confront her)

Thelma:
(In her room) where on earth could this necklace be? Mill’s going to freak out if I’m not wearing it, Gosh (searching her wardrobe)

Mrs Arinze :
(opens Thelma’s room angrily and walks in) Thelma! Where did all this money come from?

Thelma:
(Turns in shock) Mom!

Mrs Arinze :
Where did all this money come from? (In a slow tone)

Thelma:
(In anger) You went through my bag mom!

Mrs Arinze :
That doesn’t answer my question...(breaths in and out).... This is the last time I am going to ask you Thelma, where did all this money come from?

Thelma:
(Aggressively) You really want to know? Fine I’ll tell you, Mill gave it to me

Mrs Arinze :
who’s Mill? (In surprise)

Thelma:
(Proudly) My boyfriend!

( Mrs Williams slaps Thelma)

Mrs Arinze :
( In tears) How dare you stand before me and utter such rubbish Thelma?

(Thelma lets out a quick smile)

Thelma:
“Rubbish” you say mom?.... (In tears)... “Rubbish” you say... (slightly smiles)..... Yes I have a boyfriend mommy, I have a boyfriend (boastfully) he gave me the money you’re holding, he has been giving me money for a while now.

(Mrs Arinze drops the money on the floor and moves to Thelma couch and sits down, she puts her hand on her forehead in disbelief.)

Mrs Arinze :
I... I... you’re, you’re... this, this can be happening, Thelma what has come over you, I mean where is all this coming from?. You’re joking right, Thelma tell me you’re joking! (She stands up and walks to Thelma)

Thelma:
No mommy I’m not, I’m not joking

Mrs Arinze:
Where did I go wrong with you? I mean I haven’t gone wrong with you, (she says to herself) no I haven’t. I’ve always given you everything you wanted, I take you places, I give you advice as your mother, I close very early to come home so I can prepare food for you.... What else could a mother do for a child that I haven’t done as a mother Thelma?

Thelma:
(In anger) To be a mother!! All I ever wanted from you was to be a mother to me. You’re preaching about always giving me what I want, taking me places, give advice as a mother, closing early to come home to prepare food for me. Have you ever asked me if all those things you give me are what I really want? Or all those places are where I really wanted to be? Or even bothered to asked me how my day went when ever I come back from school? All you do is tell me what to do and not what not to do; don’t talk to boys, friends can’t visit if not Becky... You beat me whenever we come back from those weird meetings of yours... (sitting on the floor)... No nice memories with you mom! I can’t talk to you, play with you and whenever I bring up my fathers topic that’s when you have something to do. What kind of a mother wouldn’t want her child to know anything of her father? Even Becky’s mom had courage to tell her she doesn’t know who her father is. When we go outside you paint a picture of a loving mother and daughter but inside we both know living with you is hell!. You think you were protecting me from getting spoilt but no you were actually pushing me to the world. (slightly smiles) Mill makes me happy, he might be way older but he makes me happy!
