PAUL:

You can't really think a grand

jury will indict her for killing a multiple murderer and rapist. How could you even consider wasting the taxpayer's money on this case?

JOHN:

You will live to regret your

decision, Ms. St. John. I will not have people shooting each other in my city. The fact is, Ms. St. John, you broke the law, and are liable for punishment.

PAUL:

Mr. O'Grady, you are a public

servant. Our tax dollars pay your salary. Your responsibility is to protect the city's citizens from criminals like Griffin by incarcerating these dangerous lawbreakers.

JOHN:

I am proud of my record,

counselor.

PAUL:

You failed in this case. You

under-prosecuted Griffin. That's on your office. Now you want to spend thousands of taxpayer dollars to prosecute Ms. St. John, the executioner of a man who raped and killed at least three women. You and every citizen of the city should be on their knees thanking this woman.

O'Grady, his face red with anger, abruptly stands.

JOHN:

This meeting is over. You two have

rendered your decision and will live with the consequences.

O'Grady exits the room; the door slammed behind him. His assistants look at each other, astonished. One of them looks at Paul Bernard.

FIRST ASSISTANT D.A Paul, we will discuss the case and

call you.

Paul and Kat walk exit the office. At the ... ELEVATOR

PAUL:

Kat, clearly O'Grady will not

compromise his demands. And I realize you won't concede. You should think of my suggestion to blitz the media and pressure O'Grady into dropping the case. Create a lot of noise about your predicament. Never refuse a media interview. Fortunately, you are attractive and articulate, they will beg for your time. Remember Amanda Knox?

KAT:

I remember the story.

PAUL:

The staggering publicity about her

predicament led to another trial in which she was exonerated. Trust me, we cannot keep your plight quiet. We may be getting ahead of ourselves here, the D.A. could drop all charges; but I know this guy, he is an inveterate gun controller. He hates guns and the people who own them.

Kat nodded her head in agreement. Kat and Paul leave the building and make their way through a small army of waiting media to a taxi.

EXT. THE PLAZA HOTEL MAIN ENTRANCE - DAY

Kat's taxi arrives at the Plaza Hotel. Kat is astonished that Tom Ford is in front of the dozens of media people wait for her. Tom opens the taxi door.

TOM:

I thought you would need some help

leading interference through the crowd.

KAT:

That's very thoughtful of you.

They force their way through the crowd when a reporter from ROXc asked her a question.

REPORTER NUMBER ONE What did O'Grady tell you?

KAT:

O'Grady is a prick. If he had his

way he would toss me in prison and throw away the key for simply defending myself.

REPORTER NUMBER ONE

What are you going to do?

KAT:

I am going to talk to you and the

people of New York about my predicament. I'll tell you all about it in the next few days.

Tom Ford clears a path for Kat to the lobby of the Plaza. He turns to her.

TOM:

Can I buy you lunch?

KAT:

I was hoping that you would ask. I

could also use a tall glass of Chardonnay after that meeting with the D.A. this morning.

TOM:

Let's go to the Tap Room at the

NYAC. It's just a block away. I'm a member there and we'll have complete privacy.

INT. THE NYAC - TAP ROOM - DAY

Tom and Kat sit at a table having lunch.

TOM:

You should know I take only my hot

dates here.

KAT Well, I'll do

one, Buster. Tom laughs.

TOM:

According to the papers, you're

from Florida, graduated Williams College a few years ago and work at an art gallery in Palm Beach.

KAT:

All true. I lived on my father's

orange grove for 18 years but I now have an apartment in West Palm.

TOM:

What does your father think of

your recent adventure?

KAT:

He's proud of what I did. He

thinks the city is out of their collective minds to pursue this. He wanted to come here to help me, but I wouldn't let him. My father is a wonderful man, but he can intimidate people he doesn't like. He would be furious should anyone mistreat me -- here's no telling what he may do.

TOM:

Did he teach you how to shoot?

KAT:

Oh yeah, many guns. He has quite a

collection and it was my job to keep them clean and oiled. I hated that job, but he taught me how to shoot them. A gun saved my life three days ago and I will thank it every day for the rest of my life. When I get it back I will give it the most loving cleaning and oiling it has ever had.

TOM:

So what are your plans?

KAT:

Paul Bernard suggests that we go

to the media, explain our case to New York and put political pressure on the D.A.

TOM:

I can help you here. I have some

good contacts in the media who

would be happy to interview

KAT:

That would be great, Tom. I

KEN:

I welcome Kat St. John. You people

know I seldom do live interviews on my show but I had to make an exception here. I was irate when I read about Kat St. John's experience of near rape and murder, her killing the perp and the subsequent machinations of DA O'Grady to send her to prison on gun charges.

KEN:

Kat, what would you like to say to

my nationwide audience of 20 million.

KAT:

Imagine yourself in the situation

I faced that night in Central Park. I believe most of you, had you prepared, as I did for such an attack, would pull the trigger on your attacker. Most of you would also find it an outrage should they prosecute you for saving your life and perhaps many other lives by killing such vermin.

The man I shot was a serial rapist

and murderer with a long record of criminal behavior.

KEN:

Griffin should have been taken off

the streets long ago.

KAT:

He deserved the consequence of his

crimes and the entire city benefitted from his shooting. I eliminated a depraved monster from the city and now the prosecutor intends to send me to prison for a year or two. I strongly disagree with O'Grady and I trust most of America would object to my prosecution.

KEN:

TED O'HARA interviews Kat.

TELEVISION STUDIO - NIGHT

TED:

Kat, the police in this town have

always said if you are attacked, give up money, jewelry, anything, but don't resist, your life is more important than material goods. Yet you resisted. Why?

KAT:

The problem these days is even if

you don't resist there is a good chance of getting killed or seriously injured. The cops in this town weren't there. They didn't see the crazed look in that guy's eyes. He was obviously hopped-up on something and was after more than my jewelry and money. Besides, I was taught to protect myself. And I did. Not to defend myself would have been contrary to whom I am.
