Akibiyori Page #3

Synopsis: Family and friends of the late Shuzo Miwa have gathered for his annual memorial service, this one marking the seventh anniversary of his passing. Three of his long time friends - married Shuzo Taguchi, married Soichi Mamiya, and widowed Seiichiro Hirayama - have long known and admitted to each other that they have always been attracted to his widow, Akiko Miwa, who they believe has gotten even more beautiful as she has matured. The three friends take it upon themselves to find a husband for the Miwa's now twenty-four year old daughter, Ayako Miwa, who they believe as beautiful as her mother, and who, as a pure innocent, deserves a good husband. Their self-appointed task is despite them knowing that Ayako does not want them to do so. She doesn't want to get married, at least not yet, as she struggles with her traditional sensibilities in post-war modern Japan. Her first priority as she sees it is to take care of her widowed mother, who would be alone if she were to get married. The diff

192

00:
17:26,180 -- 00:17:27,329

Really?

193

00:
17:32,740 -- 00:17:35,573

-What's this?

-lt's Yoko's.

194

00:
17:35,700 -- 00:17:37,895

-She's back again?

-Yes. She just arrived.

195

00:
17:38,340 -- 00:17:40,774

-ls her husband out of town?

-No.

196

00:
17:43,860 -- 00:17:45,896

They had another fight.

197

00:
17:46,020 -- 00:17:49,410

Living with a mother-in-law

isn't easy on a young couple.

198

00:
17:49,940 -- 00:17:51,612

Did she quarrel with his mother?

199

00:
17:51,740 -- 00:17:54,208

No, she gets along fine with her.

200

00:
17:54,780 -- 00:17:56,452

But it's still very stressful.

201

00:
17:56,700 -- 00:17:59,260

lt's better for a young couple

to live by themselves.

202

00:
17:59,380 -- 00:18:00,972

l've often thought so myself.

203

00:
18:01,300 -- 00:18:02,653

What shall we do with her?

204

00:
18:07,620 -- 00:18:11,408

She means to stay for a while this time.

She brought a bigger bag than last time.

205

00:
18:11,540 -- 00:18:13,212

Do you think they'll sort it out?

206

00:
18:13,340 -- 00:18:16,776

They'll have to sort it out, just like we did.

207

00:
18:17,420 -- 00:18:22,016

l guess so. A husband and wife

eventually get past that stage.

208

00:
18:22,140 -- 00:18:25,974

Yes, they learn to be content.

Yoko needs to make an effort.

209

00:
18:26,100 -- 00:18:29,137

Right. That's how relationships work.

You can't be too ambitious.

210

00:
18:29,260 -- 00:18:31,979

True. lt's not good

to set your hopes too high.

211

00:
18:32,100 -- 00:18:35,012

-Would you like a snack?

-No, l've eaten enough.

212

00:
18:36,340 -- 00:18:37,898

Hi, Daddy.

213

00:
18:38,020 -- 00:18:41,057

-What's up?

-lt's happened again.

214

00:
18:41,180 -- 00:18:43,648

''lt's happened again''?

You're always fighting.

215

00:
18:43,780 -- 00:18:45,736

What was the quarrel about this time?

216

00:
18:46,900 -- 00:18:50,176

lt's hard to explain. lt's basically

the result of weeks of discontent.

217

00:
18:50,300 -- 00:18:52,575

What do you mean, ''discontent''?

You chose to marry him.

218

00:
18:52,700 -- 00:18:56,534

-Yes, that's why l'm upset.

-About what?

219

00:
18:56,660 -- 00:19:00,494

Daddy, don't try to intervene.

l've decided to teach him a lesson.

220

00:
19:00,700 -- 00:19:04,898

You need to learn a lesson, too.

On how to be more patient.

221

00:
19:05,020 -- 00:19:06,169

That's enough.

222

00:
19:06,300 -- 00:19:09,372

Daddy, you should take a bath.

Let me heat up the water for you.

223

00:
19:12,700 -- 00:19:14,292

She's hopeless.

224

00:
19:16,020 -- 00:19:20,491

Oh, yes, you know the man...

What's his name?

225

00:
19:20,620 -- 00:19:21,655

Who?

226

00:
19:21,820 -- 00:19:25,574

The man who works at the Obayashi Group.

Your friend's brother.

227

00:
19:27,580 -- 00:19:29,093

You mean Shigeru lnoue?

228

00:
19:29,220 -- 00:19:30,494

Yes, him.

229

00:
19:30,860 -- 00:19:34,535

His father owns a music box factory

in Kamisuwa, right?

230

00:
19:34,820 -- 00:19:36,811

Yes. What about him?

231

00:
19:36,940 -- 00:19:39,534

l think he'd be perfect for Ayako.

232

00:
19:39,820 -- 00:19:43,972

-Not him. He's already engaged.

-He's getting married?

233

00:
19:44,100 -- 00:19:47,854

Yes. l'm trying to figure out

what to give them as a wedding gift.

234

00:
19:47,980 -- 00:19:52,098

That's too bad. l said l would help them out.

235

00:
19:52,220 -- 00:19:53,369

Why?

236

00:
19:53,620 -- 00:19:56,930

l thought he would be perfect.

What a shame.

237

00:
19:58,100 -- 00:20:00,216

Do we know any other suitable young men?

238

00:
20:00,340 -- 00:20:02,900

How about lkeda?

239

00:
20:03,020 -- 00:20:04,976

No way. He's too arrogant.

240

00:
20:05,180 -- 00:20:08,297

No? Then who else do we know?

241

00:
20:08,820 -- 00:20:13,177

You should worry about your own daughter,

not someone else's.

242

00:
20:13,300 -- 00:20:17,373

But Ayako is so beautiful.

l don't want her to marry some loser.

243

00:
20:17,700 -- 00:20:18,655

l see.

244

00:
20:19,580 -- 00:20:21,889

She's really a nice girl.

Very sweet and well-groomed.

245

00:
20:22,020 -- 00:20:24,898

Does she look like Akiko

when she was young?

246

00:
20:25,300 -- 00:20:26,858

Well, it's hard to compare.

247

00:
20:27,820 -- 00:20:32,974

They're very different.

Mamiya says he prefers Akiko.

248

00:
20:33,300 -- 00:20:35,768

-How about you?

-Me?

249

00:
20:36,300 -- 00:20:40,293

Who would you prefer, Akiko or Ayako?

You'd prefer Akiko. l know all about it.

250

00:
20:40,500 -- 00:20:41,489

All about what?

251

00:
20:41,620 -- 00:20:42,769

The third block in Hongo.

252

00:
20:42,900 -- 00:20:46,256

You often went there to buy medicine,

didn't you? To get cold compresses?

253

00:
20:47,220 -- 00:20:50,212

That wasn't me. That was Mamiya.

254

00:
20:50,420 -- 00:20:54,698

-So what did you buy?

-l bought antibiotics and some other stuff.

255

00:
20:55,020 -- 00:20:58,376

Don't lie. You bought a cold compress.

l remember it well.

256

00:
20:58,700 -- 00:21:01,009

-Who told you that?

-You did.

257

00:
21:01,460 -- 00:21:03,610

l told you? When?

258

00:
21:03,780 -- 00:21:06,738

Not long after Yoko was born.

You were drunk.

259

00:
21:06,860 -- 00:21:11,217

ls that right? l was being honest, l guess.

260

00:
21:11,460 -- 00:21:13,291

Yes, more honest than you are now.

261

00:
21:16,180 -- 00:21:19,456

Mum, l'm hungry. ls there anything to eat?

262

00:
21:20,540 -- 00:21:22,974

Dad, the bathwater's boiling.

263

00:
21:23,260 -- 00:21:27,219

-Okay. Did you turn off the gas?

-No, l didn't.

264

00:
21:27,700 -- 00:21:29,975

You have to turn it off.

265

00:
21:31,500 -- 00:21:33,730

You're all hopeless!

266

00:
21:34,060 -- 00:21:37,416

-Don't you have anything for me?

-What a headache!

267

00:
21:58,620 -- 00:21:59,575

Come in.

268

00:
22:00,860 -- 00:22:02,054

You can go on in.

269

00:
22:11,820 -- 00:22:14,414

Oh, hi. Nice to see you again.

270

00:
22:14,660 -- 00:22:16,855

Thank you very much

for coming the other day.

271

00:
22:17,460 -- 00:22:20,816

Thank you for taking the time

to come to the memorial.

272

00:
22:21,260 -- 00:22:23,330

You're welcome. Please have a seat.

273

00:
22:25,260 -- 00:22:29,572

-l came to thank you.

-You shouldn't trouble yourself. Have a seat.

274

00:
22:32,860 -- 00:22:36,330

l stopped to see Mr Hirayama

and Mr Taguchi on my way.

275

00:
22:36,460 -- 00:22:37,654

Did you?

276

00:
22:42,380 -- 00:22:45,258

Did Taguchi say anything

about Ayako's match?

277

00:
22:46,900 -- 00:22:49,095

He said the young man is already engaged.

278

00:
22:49,220 -- 00:22:51,290

-The man he mentioned the other day?

-Yes.

279

00:
22:52,580 -- 00:22:55,856

That's typical of Taguchi.

He always does things like that.

280

00:
22:56,700 -- 00:23:01,820

Miwa always complained about him

because he was never on time.

281

00:
23:02,860 -- 00:23:06,250

Although l was the one

who showed up late to the memorial service.
