Akibiyori Page #7

Synopsis: Family and friends of the late Shuzo Miwa have gathered for his annual memorial service, this one marking the seventh anniversary of his passing. Three of his long time friends - married Shuzo Taguchi, married Soichi Mamiya, and widowed Seiichiro Hirayama - have long known and admitted to each other that they have always been attracted to his widow, Akiko Miwa, who they believe has gotten even more beautiful as she has matured. The three friends take it upon themselves to find a husband for the Miwa's now twenty-four year old daughter, Ayako Miwa, who they believe as beautiful as her mother, and who, as a pure innocent, deserves a good husband. Their self-appointed task is despite them knowing that Ayako does not want them to do so. She doesn't want to get married, at least not yet, as she struggles with her traditional sensibilities in post-war modern Japan. Her first priority as she sees it is to take care of her widowed mother, who would be alone if she were to get married. The diff

573

00:
47:42,140 -- 00:47:44,973

You sound like a wife already.

574

00:
47:46,940 -- 00:47:48,578

What's the Chinese character for ''fresh''?

575

00:
47:48,700 -- 00:47:51,976

lt should be ''gloomy'', not ''fresh'',

if it's about your bridegroom.

576

00:
47:53,220 -- 00:47:54,573

resh is...

577

00:
47:55,580 -- 00:47:57,457

l wrote it out in letters.

578

00:
47:59,380 -- 00:48:02,577

Miwa, l heard you rejected Goto.

579

00:
48:03,620 -- 00:48:04,655

What?

580

00:
48:04,780 -- 00:48:08,659

Goto, who works at Sanwa Trading.

l saw him in Shinjuku last night.

581

00:
48:09,460 -- 00:48:11,178

He said you rejected him.

582

00:
48:11,300 -- 00:48:13,939

l didn't. lt's not how it sounds.

583

00:
48:14,220 -- 00:48:16,131

He's a good man. You shouldn't reject him.

584

00:
48:16,260 -- 00:48:18,933

l said l didn't...

585

00:
48:19,300 -- 00:48:21,939

What are you talking about?

586

00:
48:22,060 -- 00:48:24,938

You just mind your own husband.

587

00:
48:27,380 -- 00:48:29,052

Why would you reject a man like that?

588

00:
48:30,500 -- 00:48:32,218

Shall l reintroduce you to him?

589

00:
48:33,300 -- 00:48:34,653

No, thank you.

590

00:
48:35,060 -- 00:48:37,130

l will. Count on me.

591

00:
49:07,420 -- 00:49:09,058

lt's time.

592

00:
49:10,980 -- 00:49:12,015

Right.

593

00:
49:42,660 -- 00:49:46,369

Today feels like a lucky day.

The train is probably full of young couples.

594

00:
49:47,180 -- 00:49:49,057

l wonder how Shigeko's doing right now.

595

00:
49:49,660 -- 00:49:52,811

Are they sitting face-to-face

or shoulder-to-shoulder?

596

00:
49:53,100 -- 00:49:56,331

Whichever they like.

lt's none of our business, l guess.

597

00:
49:56,460 -- 00:49:57,654

There it is!

598

00:
50:19,220 -- 00:50:23,179

She said she would wave flowers to us

from the window.

599

00:
50:23,300 -- 00:50:25,052

Maybe she forgot.

600

00:
50:25,180 -- 00:50:28,013

How could she?

She mentioned it so many times.

601

00:
50:29,300 -- 00:50:31,291

Then she must have been feeling shy.

602

00:
50:31,580 -- 00:50:35,812

Besides, they could have invited us

to the reception today.

603

00:
50:36,060 -- 00:50:37,732

They should have.

604

00:
50:38,260 -- 00:50:40,820

Maybe they forgot about us.

605

00:
50:41,060 -- 00:50:44,689

We joined the company together,

and we've always been such good friends.

606

00:
50:45,100 -- 00:50:49,491

We'll all be separated eventually.

607

00:
50:51,300 -- 00:50:55,009

That's what l don't like about marriage.

ls it the same for men?

608

00:
50:56,500 -- 00:50:57,694

l don't know.

609

00:
50:58,020 -- 00:51:01,410

lf our friendship is just a temporary filler

until we get married,

610

00:
51:01,900 -- 00:51:04,334

what's the point of all this?

611

00:
51:06,100 -- 00:51:07,215

You're right.

612

00:
51:08,060 -- 00:51:09,698

l don't like that.

613

00:
51:44,860 -- 00:51:47,010

-Here you go.

-Great.

614

00:
51:55,940 -- 00:51:59,376

lt looks like we'll have

a fine Sunday tomorrow.

615

00:
52:00,020 -- 00:52:04,536

-l hope so. Goodbye.

-Thank you very much.

616

00:
52:17,820 -- 00:52:19,094

Welcome.

617

00:
52:20,220 -- 00:52:21,858

Welcome.

618

00:
52:39,900 -- 00:52:40,855

Welcome.

619

00:
52:41,060 -- 00:52:44,735

-A glass of water and a cup of coffee.

-Certainly.

620

00:
53:04,460 -- 00:53:07,258

-What a coincidence, seeing you here.

-Yes.

621

00:
53:09,580 -- 00:53:11,571

Where did you go, Ayako?

622

00:
53:12,340 -- 00:53:13,489

To the cinema.

623

00:
53:14,140 -- 00:53:18,099

-Did you? Please have a seat.

-Okay.

624

00:
53:20,340 -- 00:53:22,331

-But...

-Her, too.

625

00:
53:22,700 -- 00:53:26,534

-Thank you, but...

-Are you going someplace else?

626

00:
53:26,940 -- 00:53:28,658

No, l'm going home now.

627

00:
53:29,540 -- 00:53:32,737

Please excuse me.

628

00:
53:39,060 -- 00:53:41,415

Ayako, don't you want to go with him?

629

00:
53:42,860 -- 00:53:44,532

No, l'm fine.

630

00:
53:44,660 -- 00:53:46,890

-Then please sit down.

-All right.

631

00:
53:50,460 -- 00:53:51,734

Here's your coffee.

632

00:
53:52,860 -- 00:53:56,216

-Would you like to order something?

-No, thank you. l'm full.

633

00:
54:05,300 -- 00:54:06,574

What's going on?

634

00:
54:06,980 -- 00:54:10,370

-What do you mean?

-With Goto.

635

00:
54:11,300 -- 00:54:15,657

l met him for the first time today.

Somebody else introduced us.

636

00:
54:16,100 -- 00:54:19,376

l introduced you, too. l did it first.

637

00:
54:19,620 -- 00:54:21,451

-But...

-But what?

638

00:
54:22,900 -- 00:54:27,416

A friend of Mr Goto's, Sugiyama,

works at my company.

639

00:
54:27,900 -- 00:54:29,333

So...

640

00:
54:29,740 -- 00:54:33,528

orget about Sugiyama. What do you think?

641

00:
54:34,340 -- 00:54:36,410

-About what?

-What do you think of Goto?

642

00:
54:37,140 -- 00:54:40,496

-l met him for the first time this evening.

-You already said so.

643

00:
54:41,060 -- 00:54:43,449

Stop teasing me.

644

00:
54:43,860 -- 00:54:46,055

l'm not teasing you. l'm serious.

645

00:
54:47,020 -- 00:54:49,136

Don't you think he's a nice man?

646

00:
54:49,740 -- 00:54:52,459

What do you think of him?

647

00:
54:53,380 -- 00:54:54,369

l don't know.

648

00:
54:54,860 -- 00:54:57,055

You don't know? Really?

649

00:
54:57,540 -- 00:54:58,575

l have no idea.

650

00:
54:58,900 -- 00:55:02,131

No idea, huh? That's a problem.

651

00:
55:03,780 -- 00:55:07,773

But he's certainly a nice man,

652

00:
55:08,700 -- 00:55:13,012

and if you like him, it's so simple.

653

00:
55:13,940 -- 00:55:16,329

-What's simple?

-Marriage.

654

00:
55:16,900 -- 00:55:20,176

-l don't know about that.

-Don't you want to?

655

00:
55:21,060 -- 00:55:26,214

Supposing l fell in love with somebody.

656

00:
55:26,860 -- 00:55:30,216

l might still not be able to marry him

for any number of reasons.

657

00:
55:30,340 -- 00:55:35,289

Really? What reasons? Economic reasons?

658

00:
55:36,180 -- 00:55:38,489

-That's one of them.

-What are the others?

659

00:
55:39,300 -- 00:55:42,929

Like in my case,

the girl may be living alone with her mother.

660

00:
55:43,500 -- 00:55:44,774

That's not an issue.

661

00:
55:45,420 -- 00:55:48,776

You'll never marry

if you insist on staying with your mother.

662

00:
55:49,980 -- 00:55:52,255

l don't need to get married.

663

00:
55:52,380 -- 00:55:55,178

That's not right. Women should, you know.

664

00:
55:55,780 -- 00:56:00,900

Listen, l separate romance and marriage.

665

00:
56:01,460 -- 00:56:04,179

What do you mean?

666

00:
56:05,020 -- 00:56:07,170

Well, how shall l explain?

667

00:
56:07,700 -- 00:56:10,453

You mean you could put up

with your husband's love affairs?

668

00:
56:11,420 -- 00:56:13,297

No, l'm not silly like that.

669

00:
56:13,620 -- 00:56:15,611

Oh, sorry.

670

00:
56:16,500 -- 00:56:19,936

Of course,

if you could combine romance and marriage,

671

00:
56:20,060 -- 00:56:21,618

that would be ideal.

672

00:
56:22,100 -- 00:56:24,819
