The Runaways Page #4

Synopsis: In 1975, San Fernando Valley teen Joan Larkin reinvents herself as Joan Jett, a guitarist who wants to form an all-girl punk band. She pitches the idea to a sleazy manager, Kim Fowley, who pairs her with a drummer and then searches for a face: he finds Cherie Currie, at age 15, the perfect jailbait image for his purpose; by luck, she can sing. Two others round out the band, The Runaways. Fowley books a tour, signs them to Mercury Records, and packs them off to crowds in Japan. Seeds of conflict sprout early: Fowley puts Cherie front and center in the publicity, she's soon strung out on drugs and vodka, and jealousies arise. Without adult supervision, where can Joan and Cherie end up?

My dad split. He was the strict one.

318

00:
28:43,514 -- 00:28:45,139

Yeah, mine too.

319

00:
28:45,307 -- 00:28:48,768

He didn't really leave,

he was kicked out and replaced.

320

00:
28:51,146 -- 00:28:53,481

Do you take the garbage out

now too?

321

00:
28:53,690 -- 00:28:56,109

Yeah, me and my sister.

322

00:
28:56,276 -- 00:28:57,819

Yeah, me too.

323

00:
28:59,947 -- 00:29:01,531

What is this?

324

00:
29:01,698 -- 00:29:03,950

It ain't baby shampoo.

325

00:
29:04,952 -- 00:29:06,619

I call it the dirty sink.

326

00:
29:06,787 -- 00:29:10,164

A little bit of everything

from my parent's liquor cabinet...

327

00:
29:10,332 -- 00:29:13,751

...but just a little so they can't tell

I'm dipping into their stash.

328

00:
29:13,919 -- 00:29:16,838

My dad would notice.

He likes his booze.

329

00:
29:17,714 -- 00:29:18,756

He an alcoholic?

330

00:
29:19,425 -- 00:29:22,343

No, he just likes it.

He says that's the difference.

331

00:
29:22,511 -- 00:29:25,179

He likes to drink,

he doesn't need to drink.

332

00:
29:25,681 -- 00:29:27,932

I like to drink.

333

00:
29:28,559 -- 00:29:31,602

A dirty sink is where we're gonna be

puking that up tomorrow.

334

00:
29:33,981 -- 00:29:36,691

Hey, salt and pepper.

335

00:
29:36,859 -- 00:29:38,526

Race you down the hill.

336

00:
29:39,194 -- 00:29:41,070

-Let's go.

-Come on.

337

00:
29:46,034 -- 00:29:47,952

Oh, my God.

338

00:
29:54,668 -- 00:29:58,087

What, you think because you're a big

rock star you can smoke in the house?

339

00:
29:58,255 -- 00:30:00,673

Shut up.

I never said l was a rock star.

340

00:
30:00,841 -- 00:30:03,050

Can those girls even play?

341

00:
30:03,802 -- 00:30:07,889

Yeah.

They actually wrote a song about me.

342

00:
30:09,391 -- 00:30:12,393

You know how many new bands

think they're gonna make it?

343

00:
30:13,604 -- 00:30:16,147

-Kim thinks we have a real shot.

-Kim Fowley?

344

00:
30:16,315 -- 00:30:18,691

That guy's a total creep.

345

00:
30:19,818 -- 00:30:22,737

Seriously. l heard he has a coat

made out of dog fur.

346

00:
30:23,405 -- 00:30:25,072

Excuse me

if l don't wanna wind up...

347

00:
30:25,240 -- 00:30:27,950

...working at the Pup 'n Fries

for the rest of my life.

348

00:
30:28,952 -- 00:30:30,661

It's Mom.

349

00:
30:32,831 -- 00:30:34,248

Crap!

350

00:
30:34,416 -- 00:30:36,542

-Come on.

-Places, everybody.

351

00:
30:36,710 -- 00:30:39,670

Places. Come quickly,

I have the most wonderful news.

352

00:
30:39,838 -- 00:30:41,839

What's all the commotion about?

353

00:
30:42,633 -- 00:30:44,091

Well, we're moving to lndonesia.

354

00:
30:44,259 -- 00:30:45,927

-What?

-What do you mean?

355

00:
30:46,094 -- 00:30:47,553

-What do you mean "we"?

-Well--

356

00:
30:47,721 -- 00:30:51,599

-You're leaving? You're leaving us?

-No, no. Nobody's leaving anybody.

357

00:
30:51,767 -- 00:30:53,976

We're a family.

We'll always be a family.

358

00:
30:54,144 -- 00:30:57,355

This is just something

that we have to do right now.

359

00:
30:57,523 -- 00:30:58,773

Why?

360

00:
30:58,941 -- 00:31:01,234

I'll be outside.

361

00:
31:04,613 -- 00:31:08,866

Wolfgang and l are getting married

and he lives in lndonesia.

362

00:
31:09,493 -- 00:31:11,619

You girls are welcome

to come along.

363

00:
31:11,787 -- 00:31:15,206

I've spoken to your father and he says

you're welcome to stay at Aunt Evie's.

364

00:
31:15,374 -- 00:31:17,208

Where are we gonna sleep

at Aunt Evie's?

365

00:
31:17,376 -- 00:31:20,711

He bought you a brand-new

sleeper sofa, top of the line.

366

00:
31:21,463 -- 00:31:22,797

It's really not that bad.

367

00:
31:22,965 -- 00:31:26,467

-Why can't we at least just stay here?

-Because you're 15 years old.

368

00:
31:26,635 -- 00:31:29,804

Just calm down.

This is a transition, not a tragedy.

369

00:
31:29,972 -- 00:31:31,973

-We're all gonna be fine.

-Stop saying "we."

370

00:
31:32,140 -- 00:31:34,684

There's no "we," there's a "you."

Hasn't been a "we"...

371

00:
31:34,851 -- 00:31:37,770

...since you kicked Dad out

for leaving water rings on the furniture.

372

00:
31:37,938 -- 00:31:39,313

Don't be so dramatic, Cherie.

373

00:
31:39,481 -- 00:31:43,150

Oh, coming from the actress.

"Places. Places, everyone."

374

00:
31:58,542 -- 00:32:00,042

No.

375

00:
32:00,335 -- 00:32:05,548

No. Pig stink, okay?

They're gonna eat you alive out there.

376

00:
32:05,716 -- 00:32:08,801

Rock 'n' roll music is tough music

played in tough venues.

377

00:
32:08,969 -- 00:32:11,304

Men don't wanna see women

anywhere...

378

00:
32:11,471 -- 00:32:14,849

...except in their kitchens

or on their knees...

379

00:
32:15,017 -- 00:32:18,311

...let alone on stage holding guitars,

okay?

380

00:
32:18,478 -- 00:32:21,397

Now, you better buckle up

and get ready for boot camp, babies...

381

00:
32:21,565 -- 00:32:25,651

...because you're gonna get trained

like the Viet-f***ing-cong. Bring it in.

382

00:
32:26,194 -- 00:32:29,030

Okay, filthy pussies.

Today is hecklers drill.

383

00:
32:29,197 -- 00:32:31,282

These degenerates here

are not your fans.

384

00:
32:31,450 -- 00:32:33,993

They're not here to tell you

how pretty you look.

385

00:
32:34,161 -- 00:32:36,370

They don't want

yourfucking autograph.

386

00:
32:36,538 -- 00:32:38,039

They wanna hurt you.

387

00:
32:38,206 -- 00:32:41,083

They want you to retreat. You don't.

388

00:
32:43,086 -- 00:32:47,381

Now, move it, move it. l wanna see

you b*tches do the death dance. Play!

389

00:
32:50,719 -- 00:32:52,928

Incoming!

390

00:
32:53,305 -- 00:32:54,889

Hey.

391

00:
32:55,557 -- 00:32:57,183

What are you gonna do about it,

huh?

392

00:
32:57,601 -- 00:32:59,226

-Yeah!

-Hey, watch it.

393

00:
33:00,771 -- 00:33:02,188

Oh, did that hurt?

394

00:
33:02,356 -- 00:33:03,481

Come on, Joanie.

395

00:
33:04,358 -- 00:33:05,816

Hey, man!

396

00:
33:08,737 -- 00:33:11,364

Hey! Rat piss.

397

00:
33:12,240 -- 00:33:15,493

Dog sh*t, razor blades.

398

00:
33:19,706 -- 00:33:21,374

Watch it.

399

00:
33:21,541 -- 00:33:23,584

Oh, man!

400

00:
34:13,218 -- 00:34:16,429

Man, l can barely hear you.

They're doing a gig right now.

401

00:
34:16,596 -- 00:34:18,389

Killing it. Listen.

402

00:
34:25,981 -- 00:34:29,984

You hear that?

That's the sound of hormones raging.

403

00:
34:31,319 -- 00:34:33,320

Cherie Currie.

Cherry bomb, sex kitten.

404

00:
34:33,488 -- 00:34:35,322

Brigitte Bardot in a trailer park.

405

00:
34:35,490 -- 00:34:38,367

Joan Jett, the rock 'n' roll heart,

street-tough brunette.

406

00:
34:38,535 -- 00:34:41,120

Sandy West, Miss California

with a joint in her mouth...

407

00:
34:41,288 -- 00:34:42,663

...and a chip on her shoulder.

408

00:
34:42,831 -- 00:34:45,624

Lita Ford, love child of Sophia Loren

and Ritchie Blackmore.

409

00:
34:45,792 -- 00:34:47,418

You do not wanna f*** with Lita.

410

00:
34:47,586 -- 00:34:51,338
